Acupuncture is a form of traditional Asian medicine developed more than two thousand years ago in China. It works to restore the flow of energy, or Qi (“chee”), through the body. The treatment commonly includes the insertion of very fine needles into the body, although some treatments do not involve needles.
Why consider acupuncture?
Acupuncture activates the body’s ability to heal itself. Because Chinese medicine is holistic and views the physical and emotional aspects of the body as inter-connected, more than one health concern may improve with treatment.
Acupuncture treats a variety of acute and chronic conditions. It can also be used for health maintenance and preventive care. Many patients use acupuncture as a complement to their conventional medical treatments. I am happy to work with your other health care practitioners to provide an integrated approach to your care.
How does it work?
Research into how acupuncture works on a biological level is still ongoing, but it has been found that acupuncture can cause the release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers), can stimulate the immune system, and influence the nervous system.
